Our Passion
Welcome to Shadow's Bees, where we are passionate about bees, their vital role in our ecosystem, and their profound impact on our world. Our journey began with a shared love for travel and a deep concern for the environment. As we explored different corners of the globe, we witnessed firsthand the consequences of human activities on our delicate ecosystems.
Through our travels, we discovered that capitalism and industrialization, while bringing progress and innovation, have also posed significant threats to the sources of our sustenance. The relentless pursuit of profit often disregards the long-term consequences for our environment, including the degradation of our natural habitats and the depletion of essential resources.
Why Bees?
It was during these eye-opening experiences that we became acutely aware of the essential role bees play in our food chain. Bees, as pollinators, contribute to the growth and reproduction of countless plant species, including those that provide us with the vital nutrition we need. Yet, the bee population worldwide has been facing unprecedented challenges, with dwindling numbers and declining health.
Motivated by our concern for the well-being of these remarkable creatures and our desire to make a positive difference, we embarked on a mission to contribute in our own small way to the augmentation of the bee population and the promotion of natural sources of nutrition. Through our dedication to beekeeping, we aim to create a sustainable and harmonious coexistence between humans and these incredible pollinators.
Our Goals
At Shadow's Bees, we employ ethical and eco-friendly beekeeping practices. Our focus is on creating thriving bee colonies that flourish in an environment conducive to their well-being. We prioritize their health, ensuring that they have access to diverse sources of nectar and pollen, free from harmful chemicals and pesticides. By adopting organic and sustainable methods, we aim to nurture resilient bee populations that can thrive amidst the challenges they face.
We are committed to raising awareness about the importance of bees and their impact on our food system. Through educational initiatives, we aim to empower individuals with knowledge about the essential role of bees as pollinators and the need for their protection. By inspiring a sense of responsibility and fostering a deeper understanding of the interdependence between humans and nature, we hope to encourage positive change in the way we interact with our environment.

Shadow - Our Inspiration
As long as we have been together, our lives have been enriched by our dogs. We have had a dozen or so dogs, usually two or three at a time, and each one has been special in their own way. None have been more special than Shadow, our bullmastiff. Shadow was at times a 160-pound lapdog, a couch potato, a playful tornado, and a protector. But he was always fiercely loyal and loving to us, our children, our grandchildren, and anyone else that he felt merited inclusion in our family. We lost Shadow in 2021, the same year we decided to start our beekeeping adventure. Given the hole his absence left in our hearts, it was only natural to name the company in his honour.
We started Shadow's Bees with the following goals in mind:
- Do our part to support a healthy bee population, understanding how critical bees and other pollinators are to our food sources (pollinators account for one out of every three bites of food we eat).
- Provide free pollination services for our neighbourhood, helping our neighbours (and ourselves!) enjoy brighter flowers and more bountiful gardens.
- Produce honey and wax, both for our own use and for others.
- Engage and partner with community gardens and other charitable organizations, to offer free pollination services and share the output of our colonies.
We are still early in our journey, and we are looking forward to seeing where this takes us.
